Welcome to a medieval jewel in the wilderness of the “Alps of Tuscany”
Rifugio La Mestà is a truly original place to eat and sleep in Trassilico, a largely car-free medieval village nested in the stunning wilderness of the Apuan Alps. This part of the region is often referred to as “The Other Tuscany”. Instead of rolling hills and endless lines of vines or olive trees here dramatic mountain peaks, deep gorges and lush forests strike the eye. Time seems to run at a slower pace, and we like to offer our guests an experience of the authentic village life of an Italian mountain settlement. Our goal with this project is to contribute to the conservation of what makes Trassilico unique, helping to contribute to the local community and keep this place alive.
The cultural practices that have helped people to thrive in this place throughout history meet modern day permaculture principles and ethics in our garden and field projects. In a nutshell, this means working with nature rather than against it, creating beauty, abundance and true local resilience along the way. Our association TrassiLocal produces a variety of organic and healthy food in beautiful gardens, almost exclusively relying on handwork and local resources (chestnut flour, potatoes, vegetables, herbs, fruits). We are at the beginning of a long journey here, and hope to increase the proportion of locally and ethically grown ingredients year by year.
For those who want to take the time and absorb the unique Trassilico vibe we recommend staying at our place and enjoying the peaceful mountain atmosphere. Far from the worries and rush of everyday life, we invite you to a place that enables you to relax and reconnect with the natural world.
