Welcome to a medieval jewel in the wilderness of the “Alps of Tuscany”
Rifugio La Mestà is a truly original place to eat and sleep in Trassilico, a largely car-free medieval village nested in the stunning wilderness of the Apuan Alps. This part of the region is often referred to as “The Other Tuscany”. Instead of rolling hills and endless lines of vines or olive trees, here dramatic mountain peaks, deep gorges and lush forests strike the eye. Time seems to run at a slower pace, and we like to offer guests a taste of authentic life. We aim to contribute to the conservation of what makes Trassilico unique, supporting the local community and keeping our small mountain village alive.
Cultural practices that have helped people to thrive here for centuries meet modern day permaculture principles and ethics in our garden and field projects. We work with nature rather than against it, creating beauty, abundance and true local resilience along the way. Our association TrassiLocal produces a variety of organic and healthy food in beautiful gardens, almost exclusively relying on handwork and local resources (chestnut flour, potatoes, vegetables, herbs, fruits). We are at the beginning of a long journey, and hope to increase the proportion of locally and ethically-grown ingredients year-by-year.
For those who want to take the time and absorb what makes Trassilico unique, we recommend booking a room to really enjoy the peaceful mountain atmosphere. Far from the worries and rush of everyday life, we invite you to relax and reconnect with the natural world.
